About The Gateless Gate

The Gateless Gate is an ambient/instrumental duo from Ontario, Canada. Influences include avant-garde, Krautrock, progressive rock, psychedelic, ambient and psych folk. The debut recording, Xinjiang, was inspired by Central Asian music, culture and history. Each track is intended to evoke a key person or place in the history of Xinjiang. Inspirations on this recording include Mongolian music and the early Krautrock of Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream, as well as the acoustic music of Stephan Micus. The second album, Heikan no Setsu, was released in April 2013 and is comprised entirely of vocal sounds. It is inspired by Zen Buddhism and influenced by the above as well as David Hykes, Dead Can Dance and other vocal artists. A third recording, Germania, was released via the Batenim netlabel in December 2013. Germania is a tribute to the sounds of classic German electronic music, artists such as Ashra, Klaus Schulze and Kraftwerk. Near North (2014) is a musical evocation of the wilderness of Northern Canada and features a wide-ranging combination of ambient, psych, post-rock and new age influences.
