Normie Rowe was the most popular male vocalist in Australia (with a string of hits) when in August 1966 he travelled to the United Kingdom in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a fanbase there. His backing band, The Playboys, followed him and with a hybrid Anglo-Australian line-up recorded a single without Rowe for the Immediate record label, comprising their eccentric reworking of 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' ('Black Sheep R.I.P.') and a freakbeat number called 'Sad', penned by bassist Brian Peacock. Renamed Australian Playboys to avoid confusion with Gary Lewis' backing band, the single flopped and the band returned to Australia in July 1967, where they evolved into Procession.
