About Tex and the Horseheads
Tex and the Horseheads were an American punk rock band formed in 1983. They emerged from the Los Angeles, CA punk scene, and are often cited as one of the first bands to play "cowpunk." The band's sound fuses blues rock, honky tonk and street-tough punk. The band included Texacala Jones, Mike Martt, and Gregory "Smog" Boaz. They released two albums, Tex and the Horseheads in 1984 and Life's So Cool in 1985. The band became inactive ca. 1986 due to Texacala's alcoholism and heroin addiction. They have since reunited on and off. During the Horseheads’ heyday, Tex utilized her considerable charm and cock-eyed grace in a few small movie roles, including “Border Radio” (1987), a gritty, Super-8 trailer-park dramedy starring Flesheaters frontman Chris D, where she played a ditzy babysitter; Du-Beat-eo (1984), a comic-slop pseudo-documentary about the LA punk scene, starring Joan Jett; and Stephen (Café Flesh) Sayadian’s weirdo remake of Dr. Caligari (1989), where she played a mental patient in a frightwig and a straight jacket. Around this time, she also did a stint as a story teller and back-up singer in the Ringling Sisters, a performance troupe of LA scene-makers, including Iris Berry, Pleasant Gehman, and Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde). She was also known to hop on stage with all-girl cowpunkers the Screaming Sirens on occasion. They dissappeared from the LA music radar in the 1990s. Texacala recorded a solo record in the early '00s, somewhat in the vein of peers like Texas Terri, and toured extensively with a backing band the TJ Hookers, as well as fronting Texorcist and working with Los Platos. As of 2007, Tex And The Horseheads are reunited and playing shows around the LA area.
