About Szilvási Gipsy Folk Band

The history of the Szilvási Gipsy Folk Band Accoring to the leader of the band - István Szilvási - the beginnings can be traced back to a gipsy middle school camp in 1988 where several teenage students started to sing together. A few years later, during a winter camp in 1992, they formed the Romano Glasco Gipsy Sound band. Their big break came in 1993 with their entry in the national „Ki mit tud?” talent show, to which the leader of the band submitted their application at the very last second. To wide acclaim, the band went on to win first prize in the folk music category. Their victory in the „Ki mit tud?” talent show was a breakthrough not only for them, but also for the other gipsy musicians. After 1993, possibly due to their influence and success, the number of newly formed bands perforoming gipsy folk music showed a sudden, and dramatic increase. In 1994, the band had over 100 performances which was a watershed for the group. In 1996, there was a break when the band leader - István Szilvási - wanted to introduce a new style to the band. As a result of this, the Szilvási Gipsy Folk Band was formed. Even the choice of name for this new band was part of this renewal, since it was considered a suprising and daring choice to select a non-gipsy name for a band of this type. Since this time, the band has been invited to perform at numerous international events (e.g. '98: Strasbourg - International Gipsy Music Festival; '99: 16 concerts in Belgium; performances in Moscow, Venice, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Italy etc..). "Ha megfogom a ördögöt", the Szilvási Gipsy Folk Band's first album, was released in 2001. The music is mainly concert recordings, presenting their unique style and emparting the concert atmosphere. The special elements of the performances can be found in the successful melding of the Oláh gipsy's perfomance folklore and gipsy music. The number of performances continued to increase. They were invited as guest artists by several alternative Hungarian groups (TNT, Kispál és a borz, etc...), and ensured a fantastic atmosphere for numerous celebrity wedding receptions (e.g.: in 2005 - Holló Márta, Marsi Anikó) After a long period of preparation, their second album "Folklore beats you up" was released in December 2005 under the auspices of Creative Music Promotions. This new album again provides high quality music with a modern sound while maintaining the authentic sounds of their origins. Members of the Szilvási Gipsy Folk Band: Szilvási István - vocals, vocal effects, spoons Bangó Tibor (Perez) - guitar, vocals, vocal effects Suha István - doublebass Lakatos János (Guszti) - kanna, vocal effects Oláh László – cymbals
