About Susanna Kay
Amsterdam-born Susanna Kay is a glam pop singer who already knew she wanted to be a performing artist when she still was a little girl. Not that strange actually, because Susanna is spoon-fed with music and performing. Her mother was an operetta singer and she is the niece of the late soprano Suze van Grootel, whom she is named after. She adored her aunt and learned a lot from her because they spent so much quality time together in Susanna’s childhood and she cherishes the lovely memories she has of that time. In her early teenage years, Susanna made her first steps towards a career as a performing artist. She auditioned for a leading Dutch theater academy and company, and got accepted. At the academy she could focus on acting, dancing and singing. It soon became clear she was a standout in singing, with the result she could take on solo parts in the shows. Even in the shows of the upper grades! During the education she felt the need to explore the fields of singing and acting more so than dancing, leading to her attendance of several professional acting and singing schools successfully, parallel to high school. After finishing high school, Susanna went to University but didn’t put her career on ice however. Next to her study, she worked for several entertainment and casting agencies as a singer, model, dancer, and actress. Once having her MSc. Degree, Susanna had the urge being dependent on herself for a while and decided to leave to New York for three months. There she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, where she learned the ropes of being a performing artist from the best on earth. It was also in New York where she really started to think seriously about her future and decided she wanted to be a professional singer. The moment she got back in Amsterdam, she immediately started to work as a singer. She organized and attended open mic nights, worked together with musicians to write her own songs and ducked into the studio to record tracks. Moreover, she got the opportunity to work as a glam pop singer in the trendy “Supperclub” and “Supperclub Cruise” in Amsterdam. Proactive as she is, she didn’t hesitate to promote herself. One day, she slipped into her hottest outfit and went to one of the hottest seaside resorts in The Netherlands with a stack of flyers and business cards to introduce herself to all the beach clubs there. And with success, she became a sought after artist! By her spick and span looks, and of course her beautiful voice, people started to notice her and soon she was performing in different night clubs and parties around the whole country, like on Queensnight in Amsterdam, the Millionaire Summer Fair and the opening of the ultra trendy and first Fashion Hotel in Amsterdam. Susanna posted videos of her performances on YouTube and got noticed there too, she was spotted by Tony Cornelissen, a very succesful songwriter (amongst others Cascada, Di-rect, Do) and A&R Manager for major record label Sony Music. In the summer of 2008, she signed a development deal with Sony Music to find out whether and how they could work together. And satisfactorily, because after this they offered her the real deal! 2009 was the year of writing and producing her debut singles. In Copenhagen, Denmark, she recorded her first single with the renown European producers team DeeKay. The release of her debut single “Off The Hook” will be in early May 2010, along with a so totally not Dutch, glamorous music video which was shot late February. Susanna is not only totally dedicated to singing, she’s also crazy about fashion, art and design and developed a great fashion sense throughout the years. On stage, you will only see her styled to perfection. In her new music video she also proves her great sense for up-to-date fashion and style. She gathered a top team of all super creative people in the field of hair, makeup, choreography, art, photography and film, like choreographer Roy Julen, known from the Dutch edition of So You Think You Can Dance, and Hester Wernert from Mogeen top hair dressers. Also, the music video is a collaboration with mixed media artist Joseph Klibansky and brother Louis Klibansky, who directed the music video. In the music video Susanna can be seen as an edgy pop princess, showing different looks which emphasize her versatility even more. She managed to work with top brands in fashion, for a great part also Dutch design. Corsets from none other than Marlies Dekkers, who also worked with international artists like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Fergie, edgy outfits from upcoming Dutch designers Ratna Ho and Leonie Smelt, sequined catsuits from Clifford Portier and accessories from Dyrberg/Kern, Otazu, Bibi van der Velden and even Cartier! Mid March, Susanna recorded her second single in Sweden, which will be released in the summer of 2010. Both singles will not only be released in the Netherlands, but also in neighboring countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Belgium.
