About Superzapper Recharge

Superzapper Recharge was an experimental/improvised rock band formed in Sacramento, California, and lead by guitarist Blake William. Beginning in the fall of 2007, the project has had a number of roster and format changes, ranging from free improvisation, ambient music, noise, and more conventional rock styles. It started as a half-joke solo project. Blake William released an hour long 5-track demo called October 2007 Recordings for free at a local noise event called Sacramento Audio Waffle in November of 2007. It was a scattered mess of reel-to-reel tape loop recordings inspired by Brian Eno, power noise, and sludge/drone metal. Finding a niche in the tape-loop side of the experiment, William released 2 albums the following Spring in this format, the 1/8 EP which introduced later bassist of the band Andrew Wayne, and Nullwerk + Superzapper Recharge, a collaborative 40 minute single with Oakland-based ambient artist, Nullwerk, recorded for the RPM Challenge. To support these releases, Superzapper Recharge started performing frequently as a revolving roster improv band. Performances would often open with Blake William performing a tape-loop improvisation, and then being joined by guest musicians for unrehearsed psychedelic rock music. Andrew Wayne made frequent appearances and eventually fell in line as the band's bass player. After a year of this, Blake William and Andrew Wayne decided to take a more structured approach to the band and form a permanent line-up. Drummer Graham Roggli was added and the group began writing loosely structured songs inspired by 70s prog-rock and modern post-rock. Due to scheduling conflicts and car accidents, this version of the band was only able to manage two live performances during it's 1-year existence. Roggli had to leave due to a busy touring schedule with other projects, and Wayne was let go due to creative differences with William. The trio performed their final show at R5 Records on January 30th, 2010. An attempt at an album was made post-breakup, titled A Fistful of Disappointment. They recorded their 3 song set in a friend's basement and pulled together some previously recorded garage improvisations. Feeling the main tracks sounded uninspired, Blake William scrapped the record and instead, offered free downloads of live material on the band's website. Blake William attempted to reform the band in 2010, gave up, released a solo album, and pronounced Superzapper Recharge to be dead.
