About Supertouch
Supertouch is an American hardcore punk band founded in 1987 in Brooklyn, New York. The band evolved out of an earlier group called Death Before Dishonor, which had featured singer Mark Ryan and, at times, drummer Mike Judge before he moved on to other projects. The transition to Supertouch occurred when guitarist Jon Biviano joined, and the group adopted a name inspired by a song by the influential hardcore band Bad Brains. Their early lineup included Ryan on vocals, Biviano on guitar, with various musicians on bass and drums in the band’s formative period. Supertouch contributed the track “Searchin’ for the Light” to the Revelation Records compilations Together and New York City Hardcore: The Way It Is, which helped establish their presence in the regional scene. While rooted in hardcore punk, Supertouch’s sound incorporated a broader range of influences than many of their contemporaries. Their music featured elements of melody and rhythmic variation that set them apart from the more rigid, fast-paced hardcore style typical of the era. This approach led some commentators to note that Supertouch’s music could transcend strict genre boundaries and hinted toward post-hardcore sensibilities that would become more prominent in the 1990s. In 1989, Supertouch released the What Did We Learn single, followed by their full-length debut album The Earth Is Flat in 1990 on Revelation Records. The album showcased the band’s evolving sound, balancing hardcore intensity with exploratory musical textures. Over the ensuing years, Supertouch toured extensively across the United States and Europe, performing alongside other notable acts of the time. During the early to mid-1990s, the band worked on a second full-length album, but internal challenges and shifting music landscapes led to their breakup in 1996 before that project was completed. Supertouch reunited in 2010, performing a surprise set at the Black N’ Blue Bowl hardcore festival in New York City. This reunion coincided with archival releases of live recordings, including a 1988 performance on WNYU’s Crucial Chaos radio show, and renewed interest in the band’s catalog. The band would later release the Lost My Way EP in 2011. In subsequent years, Supertouch members participated in additional shows and festival appearances, rekindling their legacy within the hardcore community. Their most recent performance took place in 2017 at America’s Hardcore Fest in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
