About Stevie Larocca

“It was hot, I was drivin’ and the road seemed to go on and on,” Stevie LaRocca sings on his CD, Living in the New, which chronicles the hard life and loneliness of the road. Whether playing a blues festival in Chicago or performing a benefit concert for a local charity, Stevie rips up the stage with Texas-style boogie and Chicago-heartbreak blues. He plays a small club with all the energy of a large venue, while making a stadium feel like a hometown honky-tonk, drawing in the audience with his unique brand of “hotrod” blues. Stevie’s lyrics explore core human experiences of love and loss, the mysteries of life, and the search for “home”. His stories unfold to a steam engine of masterful, high-energy riffs that echo human passion, longing, and sorrow. He says, “When you reach pure expression from the soul, you know you’re playin’ the blues.” No stranger to the road, Stevie has toured from Boston to Nashville, from Philadelphia to Kansas City, performing with old-school greats such as Finis Tasby, King Ernest and Lonnie Shields. Stevie’s dedication to the blues has also led him to share the stage with such legends as B.B. King and Buddy Guy (two major influences in his music), as well as Koko Taylor, Delbert McClinton, Dr. John, Keb Mo, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Ronny Earl & The Broadcasters, and Ritchie Kotzen. In 1995, Stevie signed with an Indie label who released his first CD, In Sight, Outta Sight. Two years later, the CD was licensed and released in Europe to rave reviews. This prompted an extended residency in Paris where he played at the Chesterfield Cafe and where the French magazine, Guitar and Bass, featured Stevie in a headline article. The filmmakers of the indie film, Circle Track Summer (released in 2005), also took notice of this CD, using his song Big Easy, in the compilation soundtrack for the film. When asked what inspired In Sight, Outta Sight, Stevie reminisced about how as a child he would sit in his room and listen to the trains, wheels grinding, engine churning, faster and louder as they neared, the build of tension as they approached and the release when they passed. Stevie’s second CD, Living In the New (independently released in 2003), encompasses much of the same fiery energy as his debut, but with the clarity and insight of his experiences on the road. This release expands on the “flesh and blood” of his first CD with a soulful depth and maturity that is undeniable. The southern-blues groove of his song, Texas Road, and his heart-wrenching ballad, Part of Me, make evident his growth as a musician and songwriter. Stevie currently plays guitar with his band, The Witchdoctors, and is working on a compilation of live recordings from his U.S. and Paris shows. He is also collaborating on a new CD of original songs with singer/songwriter Wendy Logan for future release. For a list of current shows, see Stevie’s event calendar on MySpace.
