About Stephan Carl Philipp Barbandt
Charles Barbandt (bap. 30 April 1716, Hanover – after 1775) was a German-born multi-instrumentalist and composer who made his mark in mid-18th-century London as an oboist, flautist, early clarinettist, and organist. He became organist of the Bavarian Embassy Chapel (documented in organist listings from 1764) and published Catholic liturgical music at a time when such repertory had limited visibility in England. A concrete surviving landmark is his 1766 collection Sacred Hymns, Anthems, and Versicles, whose title page styles him “Organist to … the Elector of Bavaria’s Chappel.” Modern accounts also connect him to the early musical formation of Samuel Webbe, placing Barbandt as a behind-the-scenes catalyst in the later flowering of English Catholic church music.
