Step Cousins

About Step Cousins

www.myspace.com/thestepcousins Finding its musical niche was a process of trial and error for Step Cousins, a four-piece band made up of Brophy College Preparatory students. "We just want our music to be heard by as many people as possible, and we are hopefully succeeding at doing something different", says guitarist Brant Stuns. The band is off to a good start, having been compared to indie bands such as Bloc Party and Tokyo Police Club. "Yeah we started as pop-punk, and it was kind of boring and we sucked at it, so we tried a dance band and we sucked at that too, but it allowed us to make something we are truly proud of." says lead vocalist and bassist Andrew McKee. Step Cousins' genre of music is definitely different from popular bands both local and national, incorporating a little but of everything into its repertoire and winding up with a sound thats a little bit retro-dance/The Cure-esque mixed with drum-heavy and atmospheric sounds. A strange combination perhaps, but it works wonders for Step Cousins. "We try to be the exact opposite of those cookie-cutter bands you see a lot of these days." The band's eponymous EP is available for free download in the Step Cousins' MySpace page and on LastFM. The guys have big plans for the summer as well, with no time to spare if they want to promote and introduce their music to future listeners. In addition to Brant and Andrew, Step Cousins also consists of keyboardist Austin Gomez and Michael Mandeville. Be on the lookout during these next couple of months for shows all across Arizona, featuring free EP distribution. Already a new full-length is in the works.
