Stéphane Tétreault

About Stéphane Tétreault

Cello prodigy, Stéphane Tétreault, first made international headlines a year ago as the recipient of Bernard Greenhouse's cello, the 1707 "Countess of Stainlein, Ex-Paganini" Stradivarius, on loan by Jacqueline Desmarais. The release of his debut CD, featuring the works of Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky, was met with critical acclaim in Canada and recently praised in classical music's world-leading Gramophone and The Strad magazines. "From the very first bars of Saint-Saëns’s First Cello Concerto you sense that this disc is going to be exhilarating and rewarding. The solo playing is astonishingly mature not merely in its technical attributes but also in its warmth, brilliance and subtlety of colour and inflection, so it comes as a shock to realise that Stéphane Tétreault is 19 years old. (...) His is a name to watch." Geoffrey Norris, Gramophone. Along with having been named Révélation Radio-Canada 2011-2012 in classical music, Stéphane Tétreault was chosen as Personality of the Week and amongst the Top 25 Artists of 2012 in La Presse newspaper. 2013 was no less successful: beyond having been in nomination for Personality of the Year in La Presse, he also found himself awarded the Prix Opus for Découverte de l'année, the Choquette-Symcox Award by the Jeunesses Musicales du Canada Foundation and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award. Recently, Stéphane was selected as the very first recipient of the Fernand-Lindsay Award, an initiative of the Père Lindsay Fondation. First Prize winner at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Standard Life-OSM 2007 Competition, Stéphane was also invited to participate in the prestigious 2008 Geneva International Cello Competition, the 2009 Rostropovich Cello Competition, and the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Competition. Now 21 years old, Stéphane was a student of the late cellist and conductor Yuli Turovsky for more than 10 years and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance at the University of Montreal.
