About Spiders for Love
Spiders for Love is a lo-fi indie pop / anti-folk outfit from Omaha, Nebraska. Their music is frequently compared with the Moldy Peaches, and Beat Happening. They were formed in early 2008 by (husband/wife) DL & CJ Diedrich. The two first met in early 2007 after exchanging demo tapes online, and developing a deep respect one another's music. CJ was promoting a release with her former band, Syd/Sid, and playing on and off in Duffle Band, with Dustin Viney, CJ's boyfriend at the time. DL had been performing in Kansas under the name 'Hugh Manitee', and later moved to Nebraska with CJ and the two began collaborating shortly after. S4L was originally concieved as a industial/metal project in the vein of bands like Ministry, and Atari Teenage Riot. The music took on a completely different form by the time they began playing shows in Summer of '08. DL had been writing and playing children's music, and the resulting indie-folk sound became their trademark. The original lineup initially included Dany Reyes (DJ XL) on turntables, but the three never officially practiced together, and the group continued primarily as a duo. Only weeks after they wrote their first few songs, they began work on a 5-song ep, titled S4L, recorded by close friend Cricket Kirk (Paper Owls), who was also featured on bass in the recordings. Kirk never played a show with the band, but was considered a key influence on the groups evolution. During the groups first peek, they also collaborated with multiple musicians in their live performances, namely Adam Hawkins (It's True), who played cups and whistles for a few shows, and Matt Beat (Electric Needle Room), who gave his hand at keyboards. After countless performances around Omaha, the two decided to take a break. DL joined ENR on guitar, and again focusing his energy on solo performances and recordings, while CJ pursued visual art for a while. They came back on the scene less than a year later, with a rejuvenated sound. In 2009 they were approached by the Omaha City Weekly for their first exclusive interview. The two posed in the article in their underwear at a local laundromat to express their openness to the audience and readers. They later accepted the award for "Most Risque' Band Photo" at the first annual Omaha 'Undie' Awards - an event honoring underground artists and musicians in Nebraska. In June, S4L recruited keyboardist, Sara Bertuldo (Honey & Darling) as a primary member of the band. Bertuldo's presence caused the group to take a noisier approach to performances. They were later described as industrial spazz-rock by City Weekly's Will Simons. They played only one show as a three piece, before their official debut at the first annual Nebraska Pop Festival - a benefit for UNO Mav Radio. Around the same time, DL Diedrich co-founded the short lived lo-fi project, Thee Tapeheads with best friend, Matthew Hutton (Thunder Power). In November of 2009, S4L began recording their second ep, Shotgun Wedding (jokingly named in reference to DL and CJ's wedding, that same year). The ep was mastered by comrade, Jack Nasty (Fucken Snakes), and released Valentine's Day, 2010. It recieved mixed reviews among critics, as their new sound was generally unlistenable to most supporters. To hype up the release, Spiders recruited vocalist Jamie Hardy, and drummer Marc West (King Fuzzi) for live shows. West only performed twice with the band before the group disbanded in March. The Diedrichs continued promoting the album, while taking time out from playing shows. CJ also began focusing on her experimental recording project, Acne Queen. Later that year, Spiders for Love's song, What Am I Doing Here?, was featured in a independent comedy, based in Chicago, called 'Welcome To Gentle Waters'. The film boosted the group's popularity among new listers, as they were being introduced to a wider audience. The duo briefly relocated to IL, to attend a screening, before finding themselves in Wichita. Since the move, they have (once again) been revamping their sound, as CJ has taken over as key song-writer. They have recently set in motion the debut of their first full-length album. The record will likely remind listers of their later work, only less aggressive, and possibly less structured. It is due for release at the end of 2011.
