About Soul Proxy

From a little town in the Free State, 3 young men, armed only with their talent and determination, moved to the big city of Johannesburg to follow their dreams. William, JJ and Dale's story of how they met is like any other: clubs, gigs, a few drinks, things in common, etc. etc. The result was a collective decision to move to where they could showcase their talents to the right people. So, in January 2002, the trio set off for Johannesburg. First on the agenda was to hone their talents into the skills that they believed would help them realise their dreams. The lads enrolled themselves into a local contemporary music school - a good move, as this is where the Free State boys found the final element which would give birth to one of the most exciting bands to emerge of late: Soul Proxy. With William on vocals and bass, Dale on drums, and JJ and Ewald making up a powerhouse guitar duo, the boys set out to discover what the collective could create. They knew they had something special as one of the first songs they had ever written together, "Solitaire", went on to peak the charts on many of the country's top radio stations. By the end of 2003 the band was getting noticed by some influential people in the SA music biz. This not only secured them a position as the opening act for the Seether SA tour, but also found the band in negotiations for their first record deal. By February 2004 the contracts were signed and the band was booked to record their first full-length album at one of the most legendary studios in the country: B# Studios. Heading the production was leading SA producer, John Paul De Stefani - a man responsible for hundreds of thousands of record sales in South Africa alone. The three-month project was finally completed in May 2004 and nationally released the following month with rave reviews. "The Way", the first single off the album, is already heading up the charts, sales are good, and the live shows are becoming very popular. This kind of buzz won't go unnoticed by the international record industry, and it won't be long before Soul Proxy will be topping the charts and filling the venues in other territories. "I think what makes us different from other bands, apart from our sound, is the way we look at the whole picture, " says William, "Some people are doctors, some people are lawyers. We are musicians. It's our profession and we take it seriously." So if their unstoppable enthusiasm and unwavering talent is anything to go by, these boys will definitely be defined as one of SA's most legendary rock bands for many years to come.
