About Sonicdawn

Sonicdawn is a composer who started early with electronic music. At ca. age 11, he requested a small keyboard ( the Casio PT-1, a monophonic keyboard http://www.synthmuseum.com/casio/caspt101.jpg ) from his parents which they granted him. This led to the beginning of his creating synthetic sounds which he pursued avidly from then on. He even circuit bent the PT-1 to get more sonic variety out of it. Imagine his joy when he discovered and came to own another keyboard which featured eight voice polyphony. At last he would be able to play chords ! From then on, his sound experimenting gained momentum. His first real synth was the well-known Korg Poly-800. He spent countless happy hours in the attic of his family's home tweaking this synth to the limit. At school, he received musical tuition as many children do. The teacher was a synth lover himself. Sonicdawn was carried away by the potential of a synth (at school this was an EMS synth). How thrilling to hear the synth saying the vowels "a, e, i, o, u" ! He got his own Commodore 64, then an Amiga, which he used to create drumbeats, which was a new experience for him. He moved on to the Atari as this would open up the world of MIDI to him. He there used Cubase to produce numerous tunes. At times he had very expensive audio tools around him, for he has a friend who had been dealing with electronic sound gear. The SY-77 by Yamaha became his platform of choice for a time, as it had a sequencer on board and also featured an enhanced form of FM synthesis, which Sonicdawn is fond of since he learned FM by means of the Yamaha DX-27. He has been using a lot of synths, also had a hardware vocoder for a time (a Roland SVC-350). He later bought a PC (a Pentium Pro 200MHz) and worked with the Creamware Triple Dat Audio interface to feed his then favorite synthesizer (a Roland Juno-60) into it. He came to love the crisp clarity and the ease of use of a digital production environment. When PC's became stronger, he came to possess a Pentium4 with 3,2 GHz. This is his DAW until now. He is only using software tools these days, for they have become affordable and the computers are already fast enough. Sonicdawn is often using an experimental approach, which means that he doesn't know at the outset of a tune which course it is going to take as the sounds he is using are a major source of inspiration for him. On the other hand, he likes to be a conceptualist as well, i.e. he strives to create a sonic entity in the real world exactly according to what he had in his head as a mere idea.
