SON ROBERTS: TELLING THAT STORY Son Roberts' 2007 debut CD You Don’t Know Yet touched and, in some cases floored, respected tastemakers all over the world. It earned him a Maple Blues Award nomination for Best New Artist in Canada; the album’s ‘Lorraine’ track was a finalist in Billboard Magazine’s World Song Contest. His new record, Tell That Story, remains unmistakably rooted in the Blues – defined by Son’s commanding vocal cadence and harmonica licks, and a well-executed range of funk, R&B, soul, and world-music influences layered into the mix. This time, Son has taken more of a collective rather than “band” approach, resulting in raw, more stripped-down feel to the music. As a result, Son’s innate singer-songwriter and storytelling abilities – and natural talent for navigating the spectrum of human emotions – have more room to shine. The new CD is being recorded and mixed at the award-winning Studio 92 in Toronto. For Roberts, the Blues is a musical outlet to tell stories about injustice, injury, loss, pain and joy. “Everyone has felt the Blues, but maybe it didn’t catch them,” he says. “That’s what it’s done to me.” Most of the songs on Tell That Story are about things Son still cares enough to remember. And it’s about things he can’t seem to forget no matter what. “It helps me to love some moments a little more, and maybe leave other ones where they belong,” he says. “And while it’s true these stories aren’t all about me, it’s also true that when they unfolded, I was there. In many ways, I still am.” Son Roberts has been extremely well received at jazz & blues festivals across Canada.
