About Śląsk
The "Śląsk" National Song and Dance Company came into existence in 1953. The founder and artistic director was Prof. Stanisław Hadyna, the son of a Silesian teacher, well-known for his collection of folk songs. The world of legends and fantasies, ever-present in the tunes of Silesia, fascinated him from his earliest years and made him decide to form an ensamble, which could render the richness and originality of Silesian folklore. The Song and Dance Company "Śląsk" presents to its audiences the world over carefully stylised Polish folklore, mainly songs and dances from souther Poland, and, in particular, from Silesia (Śląsk in Polish for Silesia) and the region of Opole. "Śląsk" has appeared in 35 countries on four continents - Egypt, Algeria, Israel, Mongolia, China, Hong-Kong, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Cuba, to mention a few. For its artistic achievements and efforts to propagate folk culture the Song and Dance Company "Śląsk" has received one ofthe highest Polish state decorations and, as one offew ensembles in the world, has been awarded the Gold Medal by the World Peace Council for the special role it has been playing in bringing nations together and strenghtening peace.
