About Sergio Mendes & Sexteto Bossa Rio

This band was the first band under which Sérgio Mendes (as band leader) ever played; counting with the piano of Sérgio Mendes, Sebastiao Neto at the bass, Edison Machado at the drums, Edison Maciel's and Raulzinho's trombone, and the tenor saxophone of Hector Bisignani. The band released its first record in 1961, Dance Moderno. After two more records, one of which became one of the most fundamental records for bossa nova (Sergio Mendes & Sexteto Bossa Rio) and fairly successful sales, the band proceeded to tour around Europe and the United States, even performing at the Carnegie Hall. After moving to the US, Sérgio disbanded this sextet and focused on other projects like Brazil '65. The other parts of the sextets have become important figures of bossa nova, such as Edison Machado.
