Selenic

About Selenic

Selenic is a progresive rock band from the Netherlands. The band consists of Joep Selen (vocals), Ingmar Kops (keyboards & synths), Rindert Bul (guitar), Ben Bruschke (bass) and Frank Nagtegaal (drums). Selenic was formed end 2009 by bass player Dennis Balemans as a vehicle to play his favourite style of music: progressive rock. He teamed up with vocalist Joep Selen, who (like Dennis) had lost his interest in playing cover bands and wanted to start a new band and be able to create his own music. After a few auditions, guitarist Rindert Bul (Seminoles, Taste of Lithium) and drummer Frank Nagtegaal (Dodgy Scene, Zero AM) were added to the line-up and the four members started to rehearse and write songs. But it wasn’t until synth and keyboard player Ingmar Kops (Progeny) joined in April 2010 that Selenic started to develop their signature sound. Shifting with ease from jazzy interludes to heavy riffing or from symphonic passages to a catchy chorus, Selenic combines their characteristic synth- and guitar melodies, creative rhythms and atmospheric vocal lines and craft them into coherent songs. In their first few years, Selenic wrote several songs and tried them out at local festivals around Utrecht like Jampop and IJsselpop. Mid 2012, the band decided to start recording their debut album Nowadays. Nowadays is a colourful collection of songs, varying in sound from 70′s hard rock (March of Knowing) to jazz meets industrial (After the Battle) to progressive rock (Answers Needed, Consider This, My True Name). Lyrically, the album is based on a common theme. The songs don’t look into past or future, but focus on the present and describe the situations and actions that define a person at this very moment, right now. Hence the title: Nowadays. Shortly after recording Nowadays, founding member Dennis Balemans relocated to Australia and therefore had to leave Selenic. The band quickly found a competent replacement to take on bass duties: Ben Bruschke (Carved in Gold, Glass Moon). With Ben in the fold, Selenic is currently preparing themselves to start promoting Nowadays and are already working on new songs for the next album.
