About Science & Industry
Happy accidents of chance sometime lead to a spontaneous explosion of creativity if the elements and the stars are properly aligned. Such was the case in the summer of 2008 when Greenskeepers founder and head honcho DJ/Producer James Curd, DJ/Producer/Ashtar Commander Chris Holmes, and DJ/Singer-Songwriter JDub got together in a Chicago basement and a big purple funhouse in Los Angeles to make some magic happen. The result of their hotbox alchemy is Science & Industry, a throbbing, pulsating, club beast bent on inducing global dancefloor euphoria. Their debut EP Let Go, Let’s Go on Liar Liar Records is the initial salvo from this electronic power trio with a little help from LA based Vocalist Marie Herald. Pounding rhythms and electro powered basslines anchor shimmering keys, edgy guitars, and ephemeral voices to create a synthesis of darkness and light, fantasy and reality, post-modern paranoia and unrelenting optimism. Named to Urb Magazine’s Next 100 in 2008, scientist/mystic/renegade/futurist Chris Holmes is a mainstay on the LA music scene in the clubs as a superstar DJ and through his production moniker Ashtar Command. His club nights are legendary affairs bringing out the hottest and happiest of LA’s glitterati and showcasing DJ talent from around the world including Thomas Bangalter, Busy P, DJ Mehdi, and even rock god Thom Yorke. His annual Lollapalooza jams at Chicago’s Debonair Social Club have hosted the likes of Bloc Party, CSS, Lykke Li, Adam 12, The Misshapes, and Parachute. In 2009, Chris had the once in a lifetime opportunity to open for Paul McCartney at Coachella. A prolific remixer, Chris has re-worked tracks by Har Mar Superstar, N.A.S.A, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fischerspooner, Greenskeepers, Bravery, She Wants Revenge, Regina Spektor, and Usher. His Ashtar Command work has culminated with a soon to be released trilogy years in the making. James Curd produces, DJs, and performs live with his band, the Greenskeepers non-stop, no breaks, no excuses and has done since he was 17 years old. As a solo artist and band leader, James has toured the world from Sydney to San Francisco, Sao Paolo to Glascow, Tokyo to Tel Aviv, and all stops in-between. His releases on DFA, Classic Recordings, Om Records, GKM, and Child’s Play exude his signature sound and quirky, jazzy, often whimsical talent for tying disparate sounds together into an amalgam all his own. His remixes of the Juan McLean, Groove Armada, Bent, and Dukes of Windsor to name a few all carry that Chicago house groove perfected in Greenskeepers tracks like “Sing Like This”, “Man In The House”, “Low and Sweet”, and “Fall Off The Wall”. In 2008, the Grand Auto Theft franchise picked up Vagabond by the Greenskeepers Feat. JDub as the theme song for the GTA IV advertising campaign. Greenskeepers tracks have been licensed for TV and film as well going viral with the cult classic Lotion. April 2010 brings the fourth Greenskeepers studio album, Live Like You Wanna Live, out on Om Records. The first single, “Planet”, will be released on Tommie Sunshine’s new Brooklyn Fire imprint including remixes from Voltron, Trumpdisco, Rob Threezy, The Phantom’s Revenge and James himself. Trained as a filmmaker and in the theatre, JDub mixes genres, eras, and new school/old school methods without diluting the essence of his style. For over a decade he’s toured North America and Europe and held down many residencies at top venues across North America including Shelter (Chicago), Crobar (Chicago), Red Dog (Chicago), Common Thread @ Sonar (Vancouver), 360 (Los Angeles), Sorted @ Smart Bar (Chicago), Material @ Rednofive (Chicago), and toured extensively with house legend Mark Farina. He’s also played shows with some of the top talents in the industry including Moby, Fat Boy Slim, Derrick Carter, Josh Wink, King Britt, DJ Sneak, Francois Kevorkian, and Derrick May to name a few. As the lead vocalist of Greenskeepers, JDub has dived headfirst into an entirely new arena to showcase his writing and performance talents. Moving to London in 2005, he began to hone his writing and branch out into other genres outside of house. He also became one of Ministry of Sound’s US resident DJ’s as well as a regular with the Artizan Music crew. Rockstar Games commissioned the Greenskeepers to write a song to help launch the latest installment of the global phenomenon known as Grand Theft Auto. GTA IV blasted onto shelves in April of 2008 heralded by a non-stop media blitz accompanied by “Vagabond” a Greenskeepers featuring JDub dance rock monster. During the summer of 2008, JDub joined James Curd and L.A. indie rock/electro superstar DJ Chris Holmes in forming Science & Industry . The fourth collaboration between James Curd and JDub, “We Just Won’t Stop” was released on DFA Records engineered by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. Later in the year, JDub and James Curd teamed up again for a retro electro rap redo of “Take Me Back” by Gene Farris. In April of this year, JDub and Gene Farris will release “Back and Forth” on Farris Wheel Recordings with remixes from Stacy Pullen, Mark Farina, 1200 Warriors, Wally Callerio, and Chuck Love. With live tour dates, DJ sets, and production releases on a wide range of labels, 2010 is shaping up to be the strongest ever for the multi-dimensional J-Dub from Chicago.
