About Sarah Hiltz

Drawing comparisons to both Billie Holiday and Feist, musician Sarah Hiltz is a paradoxical blend of old world and modernity. She’s been praised for her ability to tell a story through song, but isn’t afraid to take risks when she performs. This fusion of contrasting qualities is demonstrated on her new release How Many Fires. Sarah’s first full-length release shows her wide range of ability: she writes, plays, sings, and produces. A solid collection of original songs displays cunning word play, subtle allegory and simple honesty—devices typical of Sarah’s writing style. Far from being a one-woman show, however, How Many Fires features performances from some of Chatham Kent’s finest musicians. With instrumentation that may surprise some, Sarah takes the folk singer/songwriter label beyond the predictable, employing a horn section, string arrangements—even her kitchen mixing bowls—to help bring the songs to life.
