About San Godric di Finchale
St Godric of Finchale (c.1065–1170) was an English hermit whose story survives through the medieval hagiography written by Reginald of Durham, and whose legacy became permanently attached to the Finchale site later developed into Finchale Priory. Known for a dramatic shift from trading/travel to intense solitude by the River Wear, Godric also occupies a special niche in music history: a small group of early songs is traditionally attributed to him, and at least one survives with notated melody in manuscript transmission—such as Sancte Marie, virgine, preserved on GB-Cul Mm.iv.28, f.149r as presented via DIAMM.
