About Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band
Ryan Davis has featured prominently on a lot of records by Louisville (and in his case, southern Indiana) bands in the 2010s and into the 2020s. Davis led the rock band State Champion through four albums, and had a stint in Tropical Trash (in which he sang and played bass). His time with the group is captured on their 2014 album, UFO Rot, as well as other releases of the period. In 2023, Davis released his first solo record Dancing On The Edge using the name, Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band, on the independent record label he founded and actively curates, Sophomore Lounge. Davis was also the co-founder of the periodic music festival, Cropped Out, which Pitchfork has described as "heady." The small festival was held at American Turners on the Ohio River and other Louisville locations. Cropped Out's stated purpose was "to highlight the creative efforts of Louisville natives, friends, family, and fellow thinkers from Nashville to Chicago to Brooklyn and beyond." Internationally-recognized artists at the festival have included Sun Ra Arkestra, Mayo Thompson, Träd, Gräs och Stenar, Peter Brötzmann, and Michael Chapman. A long list of Louisville acts have appeared at the festival including Papa M, The Endtables, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (performing Superwolf with Matt Sweeney), and Catherine Irwin. Tropical Trash played Cropped Out in 2014.
