About Ricko
Ricko (stylized “ricko”) , born 31st August 2002, is an artist from Harrogate, UK who started his music career off by producing beats at the age of 15. His real name James Richardson, would tell his friends in school to make music and would help them with recording. His first dabble into musical production was with his classmate who went by the name “Saint Aim”, where they would go to the schools music studio after school finished and record songs. They made two songs together, “woah” and “my eyes”. Ricko used to go by the name “DJ Sphinx” and “Sphinxy” and started to watch YouTube videos on how to create songs and beats using FL Studio. He created a few beats but never released them due to not taking music seriously but as a pastime. He used to listen to artists such as; ASAP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Travis Scott and Young Thug, contrary to many of his friends, who preferred to listen to UK artists. Ricko took a break from making music as he wanted to focus more on passing his exams and going to university. Fast forward to 2020, when lockdown hit ricko started university but had nothing to do apart from listen to music and partake in kickboxing class. This is when he met a frequent collaborator of his, Dah Flamingo. Dah Flamingo lived in the same university halls as ricko and the first time they met, Dah Flamingo was impressed with ricko’s music taste. At that time ricko was heavily listening to artists such as; XXXtentacion, Lil Peep, JuiceWRLD, Playboi Carti and Suicideboys. The same day ricko and dah flamingo first met, ricko suggested to Dah Flamingo he should try freestyle on some beats ricko had found. Dah Flamingo then found he had a natural talent and ricko pushed Dah Flamingo to take music more seriously. Ricko and Dah Flamingo are frequently releasing songs together including their hit LAtoUK. Ricko only started releasing his own music in 2022. His first ever release was “who are you - freestyle) on SoundCloud. Which was recorded on his phone when on holiday. Inspired by the Sex Pistols, his favourite punk band introduced by his father, ricko released a single “ANARCHY IN THE UK” which was also influenced by the likes of Playboi Carti and Ken Carson. Since those releases ricko has done almost every genre of music, including Heavy Metal, Punk, Indie, R&B, pluggnb, hip-hop, rap, trap and psychedelic rock. He is known for his lyrical wordplay and a preference to work with other artists on his songs. 2023, ricko meets Young Guava in a Playboi Carti fan group chat on Instagram. They started sharing music with each other and made their first song Booth in the Back which proved great popularity. After this, they decided to release a joint EP, titled 666.
