About Rich Garvey

Richelieu Nyeswah Morris (Rich Garvey) was born April 7th, 1987 in Monrovia, Liberia. A country in the heart of West Africa, as well as the heat of a Civil War. At the age of 6 years old, his Uncle, mother and him escaped the Civil War to nearby Ivory Coast seeking refuge; leaving his father behind. His Father decided to stay in Monrovia and had severed ties with his mother; leaving the state of their relationship bitter. First hand, he witnessed the brutality of massacres and broken families. These events weighed heavily in his mind while he was dealing with so much pain. He would no longer speak to his father for many years to come. At the age of 7 after 1 1/2 years in Ivory Coast, his family was granted visas as refugees to voyage to the United States of America. Shortly after arriving at JFK airport and spending the night at a hotel in Harlem NY, his perception of the US changed. There was an immediate culture shock, and the perfect world he envisioned where wealth is directly related to the rights of Americans Citizens, was a pipe dream he created. He did however discover the love of Hip-Hop music. Through artist like Notorious BIG, Tupac Shakur, and Nas. He wanted to mimic the artist that he admired so much. He didn't however seriously start to write songs until he entered Bridgham Middle School in Rhode Island. His friends encouraged him to "freestyle" over Hip-Hop instrumentals in order to improve his improvisational skills as an emcee. Basically he has told many, that he has been rapping since he heard "Incarcerated Scarfaces" and "Ice Cream" (Wutang Clan). He says "We used to cypher at my dude Wuan's house in Providence Rhode Island and get Blunted. This was 7th Grade, lol". That spirit took him through High School where he did many talent shows and events around the Twin Cities area. Many years of maturity and experience under his belt and maturity that comes with perfecting your craft has taken fruition in his music in the current day. Not even having an album, he was Nominated for "Next Up" (Best New Artist) for the 5th Annual Twin Cities Hip-Hop Awards in January 2011. He hopes to release his LP "Rich In Spirit" Summer of 2011. His passion for hip-hop music runs deep, and his lyrics reflect that. He makes music for you to feel his perspective and relate to it. He is the voice of a young man with no father figure, that easily could've went the wrong way, but stuck to his beliefs. He is that immigrant that came to America to chase The American Dream. He is the echoing voice of that in which personifies our youth. He is the voice not heard on the radio. He is Rich Garvey.
