About Rattlesnake Gunfight
Rattlesnake Gunfight is an interesting concept. A concept which, since uploading their version of the Alkaline Trio gem Another Innocent Girl to Youtube midway through 2009, has attracted equal amounts of both high praise and also scolding skepticism from members of the late 90’s skate punk/alternative community from which Rattlesnake Gunfight draws their material. “It’s interesting to see the clear differences between the type of people who like what we are doing and those who have criticized us” says Rattlesnake Gunfight vocalist MJ. “It seems the ones who have taken to it positively are usually musicians themselves or just people who are really passionate about great songs, not necessarily the scene they come from”. Rattlesnake Gunfight is a Country band, formed in Sydney, Australia midway through 2009. It began with the demise of MJ’s former country group who had spent years playing the ruthless Australian live pub circuit. “I wanted to do something new, and I had always played around with the idea of performing a country version of Alkaline Trio’s Another Innocent Girl, a song I often heard my brother blasting from his bedroom as a teenager. I had no idea it would become so popular with the Alkaline Trio fans, let alone the punk scene at large. Most of these fans have actually turned out to be an amazingly supportive group of people, something that took me completely by surprise - especially coming in as an outsider.” It was the acceptance of the country-fueled track, with its fast paced banjo runs and slide guitar hooks, that lead Rattlesnake Gunfight to record a version of Lagwagon’s Sick at the suggestion of MJ’s older brother, a keen Lagwagon fan. “We did Sick and thought it was ok, but we were still unsure, so we thought we’d send it to Joey Cape (Lagwagon vocalist and punk icon) to see what he thought. He said he loved it, so we asked him if he’d sing a verse, and he did! He’s easily got to be the nicest guy in punk rock.” In reaction to those who have been highly critical of his work, MJ has this to offer, “It’s quite easy to turn any song into a punk song, but trying to do it the other way ‘round, can be pretty challenging, and to do it well often takes a lot more work than writing an original song, so I wouldn’t really label us a covers band at all, this is definitely something more than that.” Rattlesnake Gunfight is currently preparing to release these songs digitally in the coming months via iTunes including songs by Jawbreaker and Weezer. They are also making plans for a U.S. tour. “I’ve never been to America, so I’m definitely looking forward to getting over there as soon as people over there want to see us!” - Nora Rebode
