About Ralph De Jongh & Hans Van Lier

RALPH DE JONGH See also RALPH DE JONGH Website: www.ralphdejongh.com is a gifted blues-singer/songwriter who, despite his tender age, has already built up an impressive list of achievements. When he was five, he was inspired by his father’s Stones albums. Little Ralph practised the guitar and developed a vocal sound that makes one suspect that a black soul beats in this blond Brabander. After many performances here and there and a degree in Ancient Chinese philosophy, Ralph threw himself completely into his music. And this didn’t go unnoticed. Harry Muskee (Holland’s uncrowned King of Blues) saw him and immediately became a fan. Renowned blues cafés saw him and wanted him back. Blues festivals carefully programmed the solo guitarist/singer in the afternoon programme and the next year he could count on a prominent place in the main programming. Ralph de Jongh is a sensation in today’s Dutch music scene. Not only to listen to, but also to watch. His body and limbs become the blues when he plays and his arms and legs seem suddenly to have a life of their own. He doesn’t play music; he becomes music. And the audience witnesses an inexhaustible, amazing energy that seems to flow out of every pore in his body. And that energy results, time and again, in a magnificent feast of the blues. A feast the like of which we, the cool-blooded Dutch, no longer know. Ralph’s music rises above the average Blues story and this means that things are as they should be for this young blues musician. Knight in the blues Harry Muskee thought, back in 2004, that he was listening to a delta blues musician from the States. It turned out to be Ralph. Harry became a friend, and invited Ralph to play as supporting act in the Cuby and the Blizzards theatre tour of 2006-2007-2008. Bennie Jolink followed suit for the Normaal Tent Tour in the summer of 2007. Since the age of seventeen, Ralph has also painted. He currently does this in his Studio on the Ten Boomstraat 60 in Hilversum. Ralph de Jongh was born in 1975 in Roosendaal. www.ralphdejongh.com About HANS VAN LIER Hans van Lier (born in Groningen, the Netherlands 1961) www.hansvanlier.nl is a versatile guitarplayer. His solo's are often lyrical, but he can also really storm. This always happens with great melodic sense. He masters various styles, and he is not afraid of rock 'n roll. Hans is self-taught as a guitarplayer. At the age of fourteen he began playing the electric guitar. He soon learnt a lot of chords. On a given day he discovered a nice 'run', which he soon began to use as a basis for his playing. It turned out that he discovered the blues scale on his own. In this same year he did his first gig in Appelscha. (Friesland, the Netherlands) Hans got a lot of inspiration from his direct environment where a lot of music was made. He studied the records of Blues players like Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, Luther 'guitar' Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. After a few years as a rythm guitar player Hans went solo at the age of eighteen. During the following years he worked with various bluesbands. In 1978 he entered the Dutch Guitar Championship in Paradiso. He finished third! Hans has done a lot of work with female singers. He toured with Lia Ona in Denmark, and Gina de Boer (the Dutch Janis Joplin) has been in his band too. He worked with a.o. Hanneke Kappen (recorded a CD with her), Inki de Jonghe (King Lier), Rosa King from Amsterdam and Tineke Schoemaker (well known from 'Barrelhouse', one of the most successful bluesbands in the Netherlands). Together with Tineke, Hans was the best during a jazz- and bluesfestival in Friesland. He has also done some work with male singers: B.J. Hegen, Lourens Leeuw, Hans Dulfer, Marcel Kapteijn (Ten Sharp), Eddie C. Campbell from Chicago and guitarplayer Mick Taylor, old member of The Rolling Stones. Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, better familiar as Double Trouble of Stevie Ray Vaughan. And also guitarplayer Jan Akkerman. Some facts: From 1988 untill 1993 Hans had a successful band 'Plat', which only sung in Gronings dialect. 'Plat' has been the main act in Paradiso (Amsterdam) at a bluesfestival. Hans recorded 3 CD's and 5 singles with this band. In 1992 Hans has recorded a CD with various bluesmusicians, this CD was called 'Blues-United'. He also took care of the production. Hans has crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1985, 1986, 1988 and two times in 1999 to play the blues. He sat in with sessions in Chicago. After such a session in Canada he immediately was offered a contract with a bluesband. He also recorded a CD in Minneapolis with the American band GB Leighton and toured two times with the same band in the USA. Also he made in Austin Texas a cd with Double Trouble (SRV) and Mick Taylor. Hans played for two years in a German bluesband with drummer Henk Torpedo (New Adventures). And for whoever is interested: Hans can be a reliable and flexible session-musician. www.hansvanlier.nl
