Late Pt Raghunath Prasanna (1913-1999): A Flautist Par Excellence Pt. Raghunath Prasanna was born in 1913 in Varanasi, UP in a family, which was renowned for Shehnai playing for more than 300 years and had given sterling performances in the courts of Rajas and Maharajas. Pt Raghunath Prasanna received his training in Shehnai under his father Pt Gauri Shankar and under his guru, Pt Dauji Mishr. He not only continued with the family tradition of Shehnai playing but also took it to new heights of excellence. 'Prasanna': The Title There is an interesting story about how Pt Raghunath, got the title of 'Prasanna'. Once, while he was performing at the court of the patron king of Bihar, the king was so exhilarated with his melodious recital that he called Pt Raghunath, 'prasann', meaning 'happy'. Ever since, the great guru retained this title in his name and it has continued to be a part of the family name. Pioneer of Modern Style of Flute-Playing Pt Raghunath Prasanna initially used to play on the 'Tripura Bansuri', which is a normal looking flute, but is held straight to the mouth, while playing. Later, he took to the popular 'Krishna Bansuri', on which he worked tirelessly to invent many new techniques of flute playing. All his efforts laid a strong foundation for flute playing, as it is played today. He groomed a large number of flute players. He was the first in his family to take up flute playing, which was later adopted and mastered with great acclaim by his brother Pt Bholanath Prasanna, his son Rajendra Prasanna and his grand sons Master Rajesh and Rajat. His renderings in flute have been reproduced in a large number of records and cassettes.
