About Planetary Peace
Planetary Peace is an American musical duo known for their pioneering work in experimental electronic music during the early 1980s. Comprising husband and wife Will and Kalima Sawyer, Planetary Peace gained recognition for their innovative album "Synthesis," recorded in their London living room in 1980. Will and Kalima Sawyer, American expatriates living in London at the time, embarked on a musical journey driven by their passion for harmonic tuning and analog synthesis. In preparation for their recording project, they constructed a Serge synthesizer from a kit developed by engineer Serge Tcherepnin in San Francisco. This analog synthesizer, requiring intricate manual patching of signals, became the centerpiece of their musical experimentation. "Synthesis," their debut album, was entirely recorded on a TEAC reel-to-reel tape deck using Shure microphones and minimal additional equipment like reverb units. The album's production reflected their DIY ethos, as they self-engineered and produced the record in their quiet cottage near Hampstead Heath, London. The music on "Synthesis" blends elements of devotional folk with expansive synth excursions, creating a cosmic and otherworldly atmosphere. Originally released in a limited cassette edition distributed mainly among friends, "Synthesis" remained relatively obscure until its rediscovery in 2014. Sound Recorder/Record Collector Brett Becker stumbled upon one of the rare cassette copies at a yard sale in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This chance discovery brought renewed attention to Planetary Peace's avant-garde approach to music-making and their influence on the experimental electronic genre. Following the release of "Synthesis" and the birth of their daughter, Planetary Peace shifted their focus away from music production. They relocated to Ha'iku, Hawaii, where they established an organic farm and built a solar-powered recording studio. Despite their hiatus from the music industry, they continue to create and record music that reflects their ongoing commitment to sustainability and artistic exploration. Planetary Peace's music is often categorized under genres such as experimental electronic, synth folk, and new age, although it defies easy classification due to its unique blend of folk traditions with avant-garde electronic techniques. Their use of analog synthesizers and harmonic tuning sets them apart within the realm of electronic music, emphasizing a spiritual and cosmic dimension rarely explored in mainstream music.
