About Petros Bérékétis
By 1730, the Church of St. Constantine was fortunate to have as protopsalt (lead singer) Petros Bérékétis, the greatest composer of the golden age of Byzantine music (eighteenth century). The existence of this composer scored - the point of view of musical and artistic history - the Renaissance of the Greek world, after four centuries of Ottoman occupation, as impressively underlined in Delacroix 's Massacre at Chios . Petros got a brilliant fusion of Byzantine sacred music tradition in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries with the then novel music of Eastern origin.
