About Patrick Shiroishi & Piotr Kurek
Patrick Shiroishi and Piotr Kurek were first brought together to record new music for one of BBC Radio 3’s remote collaborative sessions, the fruits of which aired on Jennifer Lucy Allen’s Late Junction show on Groundhog Day 2024. The easy dialogue that quickly emerged between the two continued to flow after the show, guiding tracks that weigh a joint attraction to intuitive expressions and the simple tenderness of first takes. Los Angeles-based musician Patrick Shiroishi uses his saxophone as an instrument of catharsis, investigating his family’s history and wrestling with the collective trauma of Japanese Americans. Improvisation is deeply embedded in his practice, and his last album - I was too young to hear silence - comprises a single take of solos recorded at night, in a deserted parking lot. Piotr Kurek is a multi-instrumentalist and theatre music composer from Warsaw. Drawing on a diversity of approaches and influences spanning Baroque music and experimental jazz, he creates hypnotic music centred around the human voice and complemented by electronics and various acoustic instrumentation.
