About Panco Quinto
Legendary Cuban percussionist Pancho Quinto has opted to tread in uncharted territory. This unusual experiment in rhythm, harmony and vocals connects the dots between Afro-Cuban and Afro-American popular and folkloric styles. Tweaking the elements of rumba, jazz and the funk of urban flavors, much of this project -- especially the first half, as well as the last track -- sounds as if it is being played either backwards or at the wrong speed, thanks in part to the mix by Oscar Autie and Greg Landau. And it works. The result of this collaborative effort including percussionist John Santos and pianist Omar Sosa is an often haunting and fleeting glimpse into another dimension, a vaguely familiar yet strange place hosted by the very special vocalists Guillermo "El Negro" Triana and Lazaro Rizo, who turn rumba on its side. Highly recommended.
