About Pál Járdányi

Pál Járdányi (born in Budapest, 30 Jan. 1920; died there, 29 July 1966). Composer and music critic. At the Budapest Academy of Music he studied composition with Zoltán Kodály and Albert Siklos (1938-42); he was also a pupil at Budapest Univ. and received a doctorate in 1943, with a dissertation on Hungarian folklore. He worked as music critic from 1943 to 1949, and from 1946 to 1959 he was an instructor at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He won the Bartok Prize in 1948 (for the String Quartet no. 1) and the Erkel Prize in 1952 and 1953. His music shows the strong effects of the music of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. Works include orchestral music (a sinfonietta, 1940; Divertimento concertante, 1949; Symphony "Vorosmarty", 1952; Violin Concertino, 1964); vocal works (Missa brevis, 2-voice chorus, 1940; Savaria, chorus, 1963); chamber and instrumental music (Duos, 2 violins, 1937; 3 sonatinas for piano, 1940-58; a sonata, violin and piano, 1944; a string trio, 1963).
