About Owen Lake and the Tragic Loves

Owen Lake and the Tragic Loves‘ “electro-country” sound is both freshly nostalgic and startlingly unique. Hard-driving synthesizer licks meet three-part vocal harmonies, buttery bloops and bleeps, crying pedal steel, and pounding electronic beats in our fun, energetic live shows. The band’s genre-bending style draws from the traditions of 1960s country, 1980s dream pop, and modern electronic music, mixed with an experimental aesthetic all Lake’s own. It packs an emotional punch to the heart, and invites the bruised listener to dance and cry along. In 2009, Owen Lake co-founded an experimental music record label, Carrier Records , which continues to release strange and exciting experimental music. In 2011, Owen Lake released “A Love on My Mind”, an EP that surprised listeners with the band’s unusual, yet articulate and powerful, blend of its disparate influences. In 2018, Owen Lake released his second album (and first full-length), The Best of Your Lies, which was named one of the Best Americana Albums of 2018 by Pop Matters . Contributions to the album come from experimental artists such as Annika Socolofsky & Susan Alcorn . Whilst Lake releases other solo material under moniker Jeff Snyder, has also been known to fraternise with experimental electronic duo exclusiveOr/AWOL/International Contemporary Ensemble, avant jazz group Federico Ughi Quartet, improvisatory noise trio The Miz'Ries and laptop ensemble Sideband. He also composes alternate-reality Early Music for an ensemble of his invented instruments.
