About Otto Siegfried Harnisch
Otto Siegfried Harnisch (* around 1568 in Reckershausen near Göttingen ; † August 1623 in Göttingen) was a German cantor , conductor and composer. Harnisch probably attended a Latin school in Göttingen. From 1585 he studied with interruptions until 1593 at the University of Helmstedt . While still a student in 1587, he published a secular German songbook here. He then worked from 1588 as cantor at the Cathedral of St. Blasius in Braunschweig . In 1591 he was a musician in the chapel of Count Simon VI zur Lippe in Rinteln . From June 13 , 1593 to early 1594 he was cantor at the particular school in Helmstedt and from 1594 to 1600 cantor at the Great School in Wolfenbüttel. From about 1597 he led the singing of the choirboys at the Castle Church. Here he worked under the direction of Hofkapellmeister Thomas Mancinus . From there he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court of Duke Philipp Sigismund von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , whose court orchestra was based in Iburg Castle near Osnabrück. In 1603 the city council of Göttingen successfully recruited him. There he was appointed cantor of St. John's Church and the sixth figural cantor of the university-like Göttingen Pedagogy . In 1621 he moved to Celle as Kapellmeister. Harnisch's exact date of death is not known, the funeral took place on August 18, 1623. He probably died of the plague like the rest of his family. According to Robert Eitner, he died in Celle in 1630. He published some writings on music theory, but in addition to his professional activities, he appeared mainly as a composer. In addition to some more extensive compositions, including a St. John Passion (Goslar, 1621) or the “Resurectio Dominica. The Joyous and Comforting History of the Resurrection. From the Four Evangelists, recently composed by M. Scandello , but now auffs Neu” (Goslar, 1621). He also created many polyphonic German songs, madrigals and dance pieces. It was these smaller works that established his great popularity, which could also be due to the fact that he - as one of the first composers of his time in Germany - in these compositions stylistically adapted to popular Italian song forms such asCanzonettas , not actually villanelles . His motet-like compositions can be classified as successor works to the motets of Orlando di Lasso .
