About November 35th
Practicing an instrument isn’t always fun. Sometimes it can seem like more of a job than a hobby. Still, members of November 35th don’t have to be asked to practice. If anything, they’d play all day long if they could, just jamming out to the songs they know and enjoy. With ages ranging from 12 to 16, the four-piece group is a full-on rock band excited to bring its own set of songs to its Sunday CD release party. “I am always excited to perform,” Lead singer Anna Lisabeth expressed. “What better part-time job could a teenager have than this?” The only girl in the group, Lisabeth holds her own against the brothers Evan (lead guitar) and Jacen (drums) Kaler, and childhood friend Casey Cakebread (bass). The band was realized in 2011 when the boys heard Lisabeth perform at their middle school’s (Sergeant Bluff-Luton) talent show. Eventually they asked Lisabeth to be their lead singer, which was awkward at first as her mother was Evan’s teacher. The first rehearsal was somewhat of a challenge, too, because Lisabeth, who didn’t have much experience singing in front of others had an unusual request. “We weren’t allowed to look at her,” Evan remembered. “She made us turn around before she got comfortable being around us.” In its short time as a group November 35th has come a long way. Local performances have included Le Mars Pioneer Valley Days, Saturday in the Park, Awesome Biker Nights and even an award-winning set at last year’s WITStock. That’s right; the band dethroned Premium Draft (who had won the past few WITStocks) and beat out groups twice its age. “That was awesome,” Lisabeth said. “We didn’t think we’d win.” But no matter how much talent the band exudes, it's still comprised of a bunch of teens. “We don’t want to be considered the kid band,” Lisabeth explained. So when it comes to the writing for the group, the topics covered range from bullying to loss. Lisabeth and Evan are in charge of the lyrics and melodies, but the other members also add in their parts. “My arms just start doing what they need to,” Jacen said of his drum part. And Cakebread, who the others describe as the most laid-back member of the crew, fills in the rest. Website: 35th and Taylor
