About Niningashi

Niningashi was a short-lived Japanese acid folk band best known for their sole 1974 release, Heavy Way, a private-press album that has since become a cult classic among collectors and fans of psychedelic folk. The group was formed by Kazuhisa Okubo, a pharmacy student at the time, who chose to channel his passion not into pharmaceuticals, but into music. Although Niningashi disbanded shortly after the album's release, Okubo would go on to achieve broader success with other folk-psych groups such as Neko and Kaze—the latter earning three #1 albums in Japan. Despite this later fame, little information exists about the Niningashi project. Heavy Way was self-released by Okubo in 1974, with album artwork designed by his brother, and only a small number of copies were ever pressed.
