About New York City Opera Orchestra

Under the direction of George Manahan, who was Music Director for 14 seasons, the New York City Opera Orchestra performed approximately 116 performances of opera each year during Fall and Spring New York City Opera Seasons at New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. NYCO terminated its contract with Maestro Manahan in 2011, and now has no music director. The company was recently uprooted from its Lincoln Center home of over 60 years, despite the protests of many loyal patrons and audience members, as well as the orchestra members. Performances have dwindled to less than half their original number. NYCO management says the aforementioned actions were necessary due to financial considerations. The repertoire at the New York City Opera covers over three hundred years of opera. From Monteverdi’s Orfeo to Wourinen’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories. Also included in the repertoire are many Broadway shows including Porgy and Bess, Sweeny Todd, as well as Candide and The Mikado. In addition, the orchestra has performed with many visiting international ballet companies including the Bolshoi Ballet (1990 and 2000), Lyon Opera Ballet (1996), La Scala Ballet (2001), Royal Ballet (2004) the San Francisco Ballet (2006), the Danish Royal Ballet (2011) and the Paris Opera Ballet (2012). Live from Lincoln Center Broadcasts have included the NYCO orchestra accompanying Luciano Pavarotti from Avery Fischer Hall. The orchestra has also performed symphonic concerts at Carnegie Hall as well as the New York Premiere of Julie Taymor and Elliott Goldenthals’s Grendel produced by the Lincoln Center Festival in 2006. Recently the orchestra has been engaged to perform with Andrea Bocelli for his NY performances in December 2012. The Orchestra has also accompanied Mr. Bocelli on his previous Eastern United States concerts. The members of the New York City Opera include in their professional experiences performances with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Orchestra of St. Luke's, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra as well as numerous other performing arts organizations. New York City Opera musicians are represented on the faculties of all the Metropolitan area’s top music schools including The Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University School of Music, the State University of New York and New York University.
