About Natalie Hinderas

Natalie Leota Henderson Hinderas (1927–1987) was an American pianist, composer and professor. In the mid-1950s, Hinderas signed a contract with NBC to perform in their owned and operated stations around the United States playing recitals, concertos, and variety shows. In 1971, she became the first African American to perform a subscription concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Throughout her career, Hinderas promoted other black performers and composers. Her album, Piano Music by African American Composers, includes works by R. Nathaniel Dett; Thomas Kerr; William Grant Still; John Wesley Work III; George Walker; Arthur Cunningham; Talib Rasul Hakim; Hale Smith; and Olly Wilson.
