About Moth de la Cruz

Moth de la Cruz is a multi-media artist living in New York City. Born in NYC, Moth (Adam) cycled through a series of mediums of expression beginning with illustration and story telling. As a child he was constantly ill - the medicine he was prescribed many times a year, for many years, resulted in hallucinations triggered by sound. Before understanding that the hallucinations originated from the allergy, he was brought to a Santero who claimed he was pursued by malevolent spirits. At a young age he was given a statue to pray to, and classical music to play on the radio to off set the „rhythm of silence” he heard at night that triggered the hallucinations. From then he developed a fixation on classical music and of spiritualism, including mythology and demonology. Growing up he experimented with film and acting, and starred in classical as well as contemporary stage and film. During school he became enamored of the emcee battle scene, rooted in his love for underground Hip-Hop. After graduation he declined an acceptance to Juliard for performance arts to pursue music, and found himself battling as an emcee, producing experimental Hip-Hop, and writing dark fiction. His son Littlemoth was born while Moth was in his early twenties, and his new passion for fatherhood lead him to a stable job as art director for an Urban Vinyl company in NYC, working with artists such as Ron English, Dylan Sisson, Frank Kozik, among others. The recession came, and after some years Moth was without employment. He took this time to develop a freelance career in illustration and graphic art, as well as producing a mini pilot series called Circle of Agony. He also began painting, and after finding work in the field of psychiatry, began writing the novel version of COA and displaying his artwork. Today Moth continues to produce music for a solo Trip-Hop venture, as well as the band „The Nezitiq Mute”. The novel writing continues, as does his visual art and photography. „Adam’s style is the graffiti answer to Tim Burton’s style of work. It is dark, but nor for darkness’ sake. There are mythological entities and themes of classical and modern sort appearing and re-appearing throughout his visual art and his writing. Even his music has a Lovecraftian undertone, raising themes such as dangerous existentialism and communication with higher spiritual orders, as well as the exploration of the dark side of human nature.” Moth lives and works in New York City.
