About Mostafa Abd El Khalek

Mostafa Abd El Khalek was born in Cairo (exact birth-date not publicly documented) and emerged as one of Egypt’s foremost qanun soloists in the mid-20th century. He served many years as a principal musician in the Umm Kulthūm Orchestra and Egyptian Radio ensemble, collaborating with the greatest singers of the era including Umm Kulthūm, Abdel Halim Halim and Farid al-Atrash. His recorded taqāsīm (instrumental improvisations) and ensemble contributions are widely regarded for their clarity of articulation, deep phrasing and elegant treatment of the maqām system. In addition to performance, Abd El Khalek taught younger generations of Egyptian qanun players and contributed recordings and radio broadcasts that form part of the core mid-20th-century repertory printed for the qanun in Egypt. His style helped establish the 20th-century “Cairo school” of qanun playing which continues to influence the instrument across the Arab world.
