About Mingus Met De Rockin' Blacks

Fronted by Dominicus 'Mingus' Hitijahubessy, The Rockin' Blacks were an early Dutch rock 'n roll group from the southern town of Geleen, The Netherlands. Active in various line-ups between 1959 and 1963, they were generally regarded as an 'Indorock' band, due to Hitijahubessy's Indonesian roots. The group was established by piano player Paul Zelders, who in 1958 had his own group called Circus Square Jazz Band (CSJB). He then got acquainted with a group of boys from the former Dutch colony of Indonesia, the island of Ambon to be precise. 'Mingus' (or 'Mingoes') Hitijahubessy was one of them. They decided to start a new band: The Rockin' Blacks. They played covers at first, but soon started writing their own material in the vein of Fats Domino. The name of the band is spelled in many slightly different ways: The Rockin' Blacks, The Rocking Blacks, Mingus & The Rockin' Blacks, Mingus and the Rockin' Blacks and more, with the usual differences (Rockin' or Rocking, 'and' or &). At least one of their singles, the rather odd 'Hier is ik weer', was formally credited to Mingus met de Rockin' Blacks.
