About Mike Meston

Mike Meston and the Meston Band blend rock, folk, alt-country and jazz to create a unique variety of song. Mike Meston, the main songwriter grew up in the island state of Tasmania (just south of mainland Australia) during the 80s and 90s. He was given a ukelele at a young age by grandparents who had returned from abroad. This changed his life, as he discovered the power of creating music. Soon after, Mike was inspired to buy a guitar, a good instrument for creating songs. In his formative years Mike listened to classic Brittish sounds like Lennon and McCartney and The Police. Like many young guitarists, he drooled over Jimi Hendrix albums and later was heavily influenced by the eclectic mix of popular and 'alternative' music that came from the late eighties and early ninties, including Nirvana, Radiohead and Nick Cave. More recently Mike has been influenced by some classic songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, early Billy Joel and Tom Waits, as well as gaining inspiration from some alt-artists like Wilco, The Shins and Modest Mouse. After being involved in many choirs and various groups and developing skills on guitar and keyboards he moved to arrange and perform songs in a variety of live and recorded settings. After a number of songwriting and performance achievements in his home state it seemed rational to pursue a career in the larger city of Melbourne. Mike Meston is also currently playing with other outfits including the jazz/blues band Quince and acoustic soul duet Miller and Mike.
