About Miguel Pérez de Zavala

Miguel Pérez de Zavala was a Spanish Baroque composer and guitarist active in the late seventeenth century (circa 1650–1700), best known today through the inclusion of his Diferencias sobre marizápalos on recordings of Hispanic Baroque repertory. His music reflects the improvisatory, variation-based style associated with baroque guitar and dance forms, and he appears in modern discographies as part of the broader early-music revival that brings 17th-century Hispanic sacred and secular traditions back into performance. Diferencias sobre marizápalos is preserved in manuscripts and anthologies of baroque guitar music, and its appearance alongside villancicos and other dance forms on influential recordings (such as Missa Mexicana) has helped ensure his lasting if specialized presence in early music discography.
