About Merethe Soltvedt
History/ background Merethe Soltvedt is a well kept secret from Askøy, an island outside of Bergen, Norway. But she won't be a secret for much longer. She has recorded the EP "say THANK U and smile alot..." (2004), the CD "Audio Charm Bracelet" (2006) and the radio singel "U can" (2007). It's all released on her own label RedHeadRecords Merethe Soltvedt. She is a singer/songwriter playing the guitar, and she is also co-producing all her recordings. With the release of "Audio Charm Bracelet" she introduced her artist name, "Key". She wanted a name that was easier to pronounce and remember, especially in countries other than Norway. She no longer uses this artist name because she feels it's more natural to use her own name, Merethe Soltvedt. It is Merethe's voice that will capture you, and her lyrics are very personal. This combined with her stage presence is probably the reason why she gets very emotional responses from her audience. "It's perfectly natural for me to have personal lyrics, but I'm surprised and humbled everytime someone from the audience opens up to me after the show, telling me how I have impacted them on a very personal level." Merethe has done quite a few TV and radio appearances in Norway, and has done shows and events in different parts of the country, plus in London, Den Haag, Seattle and Gothenburg. Merethe Soltvedt was born an raised on Askøy, and she has been singing since sound could come out of her mouth. There are recordings of her from when she was 3 years old, and she had the habit of singing till she lost her voice everytime the family was on a roadtrip. She also loved making up songs in "silly-english" when she 4-5 years old. Usually in the bathroom because of the accoustics there. At age 10 she wrote her first real song in real english. It was called "My boy" and she performed it in front of the entire school district. Merethe started playing guitar when she was 14. She would jam with her oldest brother, playing blues on accoustic guitars and gradually advance to electric guitars. She is a self-taught musician. Around the age of 17 she started her first rockband. It was supposed to be an all-girl-band but Askøy didn't have enough rock-chicks. Two guys stepped up to the plate and Volvulus was formed. They played Hard Rock and warmed up for the american band L7 once in Bergen. They also got to the finals at a norwegian national competition. Volvulus ceased to exist when Merethe went to a boarding school at the other side of the country. She went back to playing accoustic guitar and wrote her first "singer/songwriter"-song there. She performed this song alone in front of her schoolmates. This was Merethe's first solo-performance since primary school and the start of a long journey as a solo-artist. Merethe Soltvedt is currently preparing to start recording her new album. The journey continues...
