About Meals for Children
Los Angeles’ Meals For Children is a rare gem to discover in a cavern full of dirt encrusted rocks. With an average age of 17, the band made up of two high school juniors and two college freshmen have already opened for indie favorites such as the Octopus Project and Electrocute. MFC is no stranger to the indie world either—just after putting together their first self-released CD, We Bid On Stronghold Mountain, local KCRW DJ Chris Douridas gave the group airplay on his radio show, Newground, which caught the eye and playlists of DJs for the L.A. radio station Indie 103.1. Meals began as the solo effort of guitarist, singer and sometimes bassist Mario Luna while he was in high school. Using his new Mac computer equipped with Garageband and an internal microphone, Mario recorded and layered guitar riffs supporting them with homemade beats as well as his trumpet which he learned to play in middle school. Pulling inspiration from groups like Explosions in the Sky, Pinback, Death Cab for Cutie and Pele, Mario created a distinctive sound around his music and further signified it through his singing. After years of refusing to play live but continuously creating fresh and exciting music, Luna decided to take his passion to the new level recruiting school friends Mike Prior, Jason Wolchuk, Randy Lee and later Jeff Mahachai to accompany him in playing his music—it began as practice, teasing the idea of a live show. Meals’ first show was a benefit to raise money for a school foundation known as Oakgrove where they single-handedly raised hundreds of dollars. Since then the group has continued to play these fundraisers which have given them a great reputation in the Los Angeles area. Since developing a name for themselves the bandmates have worked with side projects – Randy did one song with Books And Music and continues his solo work as Riplee Jumbles On, Mike created Extinguished Erection, Mario went on to create post-rock outfit Nephews, solo Ukelele project Milk as well as aid in The Histories and Jeff continues to work with his former bands Winesburg and Yes Means No.
