About Meagin Donovan

"My number one goal with my music is to inspire listeners," states Seattle-based singer/songwriter Meagin Donovan, who is fresh out of the studio with her self-released debut album, No Second Self. "While recording this album, everything came from within; I found inspiration in life experiences, relationships, day-to-day emotions, and, of course, other artists’ music and stories. I wrote all of the music and arrangements for the album and played all of the guitar and keys parts, which was a new experience for me," says Donovan. Recorded at Ultraviolet Studios with Steve Turnridge engineering, Wayne Porter on percussion and Jerry Brown on bass, No Second Self is tight and funky, with energetic rhythmic nuances that Meagin refers to as her "freestyle pattern strumming." "My guitar style has been called everything from technically intricate to uninhibited," says Donovan, after receiving welcome feedback at her live performances. Donovan's voice provides contrast to the otherwise upbeat music, calling to mind pop-punk femmes Courtney Love and Chrissy Hynde. Born in Noblesville, Indiana and raised on the sounds of Paul Simon and Neil Diamond, Donovan found her true calling to write music during her tenure at Washington State University. Meagin decided to focus on sociology in college because she saw it as a combined opportunity to mesh her songwriting and studies. "I took an entry-level sociology class not expecting anything, but was intrigued by my long-haired, leather coat-wearing biker professor. I loved the culture around the sociology community and staff...Beer and Jazz," she says with a laugh. "We are free-thinkers." Drawing from folk influences such as Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco, Meagin's acoustic flavor is clearly the main ingredient when defining her music. However, her music is rhythmic and undoubtedly pulls from urban influences. "I grew up listening to hip-hop like Snoop Dog, Naughty by Nature and Dr. Dre. I'm also a closeted Eminem fan," she states with a grin. Meagin Donovan continues to grow her fanbase at local showcases while tirelessly promoting her album over the New Year.
