About Mateo Peñalba
Mateo Peñalba Ramos (? - Segorbe, June 10, 1714; fl. 1681-1714) was a Spanish composer and master of a chapel. The origins of maestro Peñalba are unknown. There has been speculation about an origin in Onteniente, mainly due to another musician, Peñalba Donar, who has been detected there. Climent denies this relationship, stating that the Ontenian origin is still speculation. The origins of maestro Peñalba are unknown. Climent denies this relationship, stating that the Ontenian origin is still speculation. The first news of Peñalba is from his appointment as sochantre of the Segorbe Cathedral on November 22, 1681. On April 12, 1684, the chapel master Miguel Monchiu Panzano - also as Monjiu Panzano - died, with whom Peñalba had been collaborating until then. The council asked Peñalba to occupy the teaching on an interim basis, which the composer accepted. Peñalba remained an interim for 26 years, maintaining his position in the Chaplaincy of Sochantre, but gave the 10 pounds that were given to the magisterium of the music chapel to the sacabuche, Pedro Morante. In addition, he was granted days off to dedicate them to the composition. On February 20, 1691, the Cathedral council of Segorbe agreed to appoint Peñalba as chapel master, with "all the honors and foreminences enjoyed by the other Chapel Masters of this Holy Church," to press for their competence and dedication. He would remain in office for nine years, until May 9, 1710, when he resigned from the teaching profession. He still remained in the sochantria until June 10, 1714, when he died. He was buried at the foot of the Carmen chapel of the cathedral. Mateo Peñalba left his music to his sister, María Peñalba, who died in 1719. Mateo Peñalba's brother-in-law, Vicente Ferrer, handed the papers to the Cabildo in exchange for the musicians of the chapel attending the burial of his wife. The work of Mateo Peñalba is in the archive of the Cathedral of Segorbe. According to Climent, the composer left 147 compositions in the archive. 10 psalms, 4 motets, 1 magnificates, 3 antiphons, 1 anthem and 60 Christmas carols are preserved. José Perpiñán affirms that another 25 works by Peñalba have been lost.
