Imagine climbing a mountain, surrounded by the most beautiful scenery one can only imagine. Behold a fjord 800 meters below you, with its blue arms stretching out with raging brushes of waves on to beautiful polished rocks in the archipelago. An eagle is soaring high above you, and the only thing you can hear is the mesmerizing whispers of the wind. This sight is what Maria is trying to give you. Driven by the Norwegian nature and the love for her family, her debut album, ‘Birds Don’t Tell’ has started to take its form. With her enchanting lyrics and clever euphemisms, she compels you to take a part in her life. It’s intimate, and maybe only hers to keep, but with the musical drive and talent Maria possesses, it is only fair that she shares her musical works. Maria Toresen comes from an extremely musical family. She plays violin, piano and guitar, and masters all other instruments you can think of. It was inevitable that she became a musician, and has a long musical career behind her 29 years, and now she is finally releasing her first solo album. For Maria, a song is about feelings. A well-written song can give you a sense of closeness and belonging. As a struggling musician it is easy to lose sight of why you first got into music, and the lack of motivation hits you from time to time. Writing intimate lyrics about your childhood struggles and the risk of exposing your dysfunctional love life therefore takes courage. For Maria it has been tough to reveal her darkest secrets and thoughts through her music. “In the beginning I wrote solely for my self, as a diary,” Maria says. “But when I started showing the music to my friends, when they said they experienced the same sort of serenity the music has given me, that’s when it was all worth it”. To define Maria’s music is a bewildering task. Her music is characterized by beautiful harmonies, melodic antics combined with touching ‘on the spot’ lyrics. She sways between the genres of pop, folk and Americana, and boldly experiments with soft electronica synths. Her songs make room for both musical satires and darker melancholy, and it is impossible to stand unaffected by her mesmerizing vocals. The forthcoming debut album is called Birds Don’t Tell, and it is a personal revelation of beauty. It is a dedication to Maria’s most beloved ones, and the beauty of the Norwegian nature inspires it. Hopefully the birds will tell; because the world really needs to start listen.
