The digital form duo, Matthew Dean and Manuel Ferreira, sidled onto the Electronic Dance Music scene in South Africa in early 2006. A recent trip to London had inspired Manuel, aka Manwell Eff, after witnessing the Big Smoke’s cultivated club life, experiencing the global sounds and getting face time with some serious beat making machinery. Bringing this new ambition to the fore back home with partner in chime Matthew, the two got down to business and got involved in the Johannesburg party scene, focusing on dj’ing at the more unusual and underground venues around the city. Bringing in the best elements of a variety of favoured genres, digital form found their groove in an unwittingly calculated mash up of all things techno, minimal, housey and tech techy. If its dance-floor oriented and well produced, the digital form boys are sure to give it a drop and spin! Over the next year they scouted and touted their offering; a combined understanding and learned knowledge of music and a view to a digitally accelerated club culture. They soon came to find themselves at the helm of a ‘gadget boy’ style of inquisitiveness; they needed to know how to do it all! The emergence of new software and sound technologies gave them the access to fully explore their musical and creative freedom and so, digital form fell naturally into the role of beat-makers. Making their music heard, with this digital new age in mind, Manuel and Matthew found the immediate progression for digital form to have a virtual base. The development of digital form netlabel had a very different music download approach in mind. The first of its kind in South Africa, digital form netlabel serves as a platform for like minded artists from South Africa and around the world to share their music and productions with anyone that wants to give it a listen. Fundamentally, the site also functions as a link between the music heard only in clubs and a simply dance music charged lifestyle, allowing music lovers to get their fix anytime of day or night through the release of exclusive tracks and mixes available for download. If this is the shape of things to come, digital form will embody, embrace and empire a whole new era of Electronic Dance Music.
