The Magic Heart Genies is the west coast underground’s newest collaboration that consists of Myka 9, JtheSarge and DJ Drez. This fresh new hip-hop crew features Los Angeles, California's one and only, Myka 9, the soulful and lyrical seasoned veteran. Alongside him is JtheSarge the versatile and vocally talented hip-hop artist from Humboldt County, Ca. Backed by one of the finest DJ's to come out of California, Dj Drez. The group has created a work of art entitled Heartifact, which was released in 2008, and are on the move to spread the magic, the power, and the positive message. Accompanying the “Genies” at times, or on request, is Humboldt’s horn section, Fat Back, a three piece, alongside various female guest vocalists that contribute to the “Goddess” attributes of the Magic Heart Genie sound Good energy, good music and good people is what the Genies are all about. The world right now is need of a shift towards more love, and respect towards all things. The Magic Heart Genies are helping to paint that picture and are putting in work, walking the walk. “Myka and I met at show in Humboldt County,” explains emcee JtheSarge. “I hired him to do a few songs for my record label, High Art Records, and we built on our musical relationship from there.” J explains that In October of 2007 the two agreed to do an album together. A month and a half of consistent recording led to an eighteen track LP and a beautiful concept album. Heartifact was created with the help of DJ Drez and a team of topnotch west coast track masters including Myka 9, Sarge, DJ Fat Jack and GMG. What’s more, it incorporates studio performances from various horn players, drummers, and guitarists from all around Northern California and back singer Shannon Ivey. And though this album’s strength lies in its collaborative effort, each artist has cred in their own right in the game. Myka 9 (Michael Troy) a founding member of legendary group Freestyle Fellowship, has been championing his often-imitated, never-duplicated lyrical style around the world since the early 90s. Myka has achieved BET/MTV video rotation, and lauded in media outlets including Spin, Vibe, and Source magazines as well as the LA Times. JtheSarge is a well-known musician in northern California’s “redwood curtain ”for over a decade. Whether on the mic, the bass guitar, or behind the controls, Sarge is constantly pushing the envelope in both hip hop and reggae. Having worked with the likes of hip hop pioneers KRS 1, Sadat X, Medusa, Busdriver, and reggae sensations’ Shinehead, Ras Attitude, and Ishi Dube, he is most known for his riveting unparalleled stage presence. Sarge has opened up for the likes of Mr. Lif, Del the Funky Homosapien, Guru, Dead Prez, among others.
